The Junior Toddler program will provide warm, responsive caregiving, so essential to a young child’s healthy development and wellbeing, to our youngest children in two classrooms. Our youngest Junior Toddlers (approximately 12-15 months of age at the beginning of the school year) will have their own specially designated classroom purposefully designed to support the learning and development of this age group. We decided to offer this program in our second full year of operation to best meet the needs of our Junior Toddler class by reducing the age range of this group. From 12 to 24-months of age, young children go through a rapid period of growth and development, particularly in the areas of language and physical. The JJ room will be purposefully designed to promote language and physical development with music and movement, book nooks and an indoor gross motor climber and a soft play area. This will serve as the home base for our JJ Toddlers but all of our Junior Toddlers will visit this area each day as small groups of children rotate between the JJ Toddler soft play room, the Junior Toddler larger classroom, the small playground and the larger garden each day.

The program will have a flexible schedule to ensure that it is responsive to each child’s personal schedules, natural rhythms, preferences, cues, daily needs, and responses to the program. The schedule will be organized around daily caregiving routines and emotional needs but will follow a consistent pattern of interesting and enjoyable developmentally appropriate activities including frequent time outdoors. While all children feel secure and thrive when they experience consistency of care between home and the center, very young children particularly benefit from this. Therefore, the schedule and planned activities for each JJ Toddler children in our care will be reviewed on a daily and weekly basis through careful child observation, reflection, and communication with parents.
